About the Candidate

Hello there! My name is Waleed Ovase. I am a senior at Richard Montgomery High School and a long-time resident of Rockville, Maryland. I am running for City Council.

When I first moved here from Oklahoma, I immediately fell in love with Rockville. I was immediately impressed by the community that welcomed me. Everywhere you go, people are friendly and full of pride for their hometown. Rockville is incredibly diverse. I couldn’t think of a better place to live. That is why I am still here, and not looking to leave anytime soon, even after I graduate from high school.

I love to do things that make an impact. I am involved with the theater program at my high school. I am the executive producer for Giant Gnome Productions, my radio drama wing. We’ve been broadcast in parts of the United States and Canada, and our shows receive countless downloads every month. I regularly write letters to the editor reviewing local community and school theater productions. Once I’ve started something, I’m dedicated, and it will take some very strong forces to make me stop.

I have no doubt that many of you are wary of me as a first-time candidate and a high school student. This is the first time I’ve run, so you know I’m not just running as a point of pride. I’m not a perennial candidate, and my platform is actually relevant today. I firmly believe every plank in my platform, and vow to pursue them once I’m elected.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have some incredible people working on my campaign. I’d like you to meet the core committee.

Sairam Nagulapalli is my Campaign Manager and Chief Campaign Strategist. He helped me form my core platform and handles all campaign related events. His help is invaluable.

Drew Gallagher is the campaign’s media manager. He designed the website and publications, written much of the copy, and helped me with my platform. When he’s not busy, he writes a blog called Catix.

Ben Cahill is always ready to listen to new ideas and help make them better. He is my go-to person for numbers and political advice, and provides the much-needed comic relief at our committee meetings.

Amy Hosseinian manages my presence in the social networks and coordinates our public events. She’s also working on putting together some interviews for me with local Rockville residents.

Brigitta Mullican, my treasurer, manages the money and keeps the campaign in line with logistics. A former candidate for mayor and council, she has the experience that this campaign needs.
